Ever Returning Ripples Through Space

THE SHAPE came first, outlined in pencil using a large compass between the two radia (outside lines enclosing the circular segments.)

The cirlcular lines started small in length at the top increasing in size and then decreasing towards the middle. This was then repeated as I worked down the painting. On the top haslf I again concentrated on 4 DARKER colours getting darker towards the bottom. This i did be applying a small amount of black colouriser to the paints each time for each line.

In the centre is a circle comprising of the 4 colours from the top in full circumference being a point of focus. The top and bottom bands appear to be behind the circle giving the drawing a sense of perspective.

Finally, the dark, black background was applied with a roller using a mixture of black and white matt paint therefore producing a slate effect and a second coat of black was applied to darken it. A gloss varnish was then applied to the background. In between CERTAIN circular lines (bands of colour) , i applied Diamond glaze varnish to enhance, bring out the colour, leaving other bands with a matt finish.

Sphere of Influence

I enjoyed the work in the production of this piece. A homemade-hinged instrument similar to a compass, on a large scale, was made to enable me to make concentric circles. Colour was added liberally with a freehand only using the circles as a guidline, quite against my usual nature of being a perfectionist and keeping to the line.

The colours were mixed up by mainly myself and when dry were varnished or left as a matt finish. the dark coloursI varnished in an attempt to bring them out, to contrast the light with the dark.

I felt the circles were almost hypnotic the closer I got to finishing whilst the centre i.e the core seemed to me like a beaming light. An interesting piece with various meanings e.g. blinded by the light, round and around, orbiting the sun and bands of light and darkness.
